Hello!!

First of all I'm new to this forum by searching for help in starting on a Mill Hill cross stitch/beading kit. It's been a very long time since I cross-stitched and I've never mixed in beading in a project. I was so taken by this kit that I wanted to start again. WELLLL...I have sorted, set-up my work area and now....just where do I begin? Do I start in the center of the project? Do I do all the floss stitches first? Do I start at the bottom and work up? Since I have to...

I have a question. I used to use bobbins, then I switched to 'floss-a-way' bags because I noticed that when I unwind the floss from the bobbins in has little kinks, or maybe zig zag edges and I was affraid the floss would'nt lay flat on my piece at tho's spots. But I'm finding out that most people use the bobbins. I did like the way the bobbins were organized and in a nice box compared to the rings. What's your ideas on this subject. I guess I'm taking a count here. Which do you's prefer?

I am still using aida, can't seem to get up the courage to work on linen, and was wondering if I should try evenweaves first before going to linen. Also, is it worth investing in an Ott-Lite? I have recently registered to stitch for charity (OTB)and am wondering about the look of the back.

A row or block of stitches is easier to keep neat but a lot of the design is usually something like - 5 straight, over and up two, back one, up three, - which is not so easy to keep neat at the back. Does anyone here use a backing on their bookmarks once they are stitched?
I've read that a lot of folks seem to have problems stitching with metallics. I really never have had problems, though. I fasten the metallic to the eye of the needle by pushing a loop of thread through the eye and then pulling the needle through the loop. This anchors the metallic thread to the needle and prevents the thread from slipping and abraiding.

I also hold the metallic floss at the eye of the needle.

Thought I'd share this hint with everyone! When getting a piece of fabric ready for stitching, I'm sure most of us zig-zag the edges with our sewing machines. If you're like me, and your sewing machine doesn't sit out all the time, you can trim the edges with a pair of pinking shears. I wouldn't recommend this for the soft evenweaves but it works nicely for Aida and some of the stiffer linens.

Pam
